"THE COVENANT"- A Yoruba Creation Myth Adapted by David Evans
Before the Beginning
Before the beginning there was no time. Liam
There was no space. Enzo
There was no light. Ellis
There was no thing. Harry
The scorching wind, Beth
Goddess of the moment,
With primal impulse,
Splits the sphere.
Tearing the black fabric of space. Eve
Black veil and sudden tomb.
The hungry Earth,
The life spark to start the race.
In The Beginning
In the beginning, Heloise
There was Heaven.
Heaven was in the sky.
Below Heaven was Earth, Tilly
Primordial Earth.
Unprepared for Man.
Steaming, swirling and heaving, Liam
It spewed up life-forms vast
And monstrous.
And in the end, Kirsty
The Earth was covered
with soil sent down from Heaven.
that Earth below was ready.
The Creation of Plants and Animals
The Earth was dry. Tia
The Earth was wide.
The Earth was without beauty.
(This section is performed as a sequence of images the order is as follows: trees, fishes, a large bird and leopard pouncing on a duika.)
The Earth was rich and furnished well Lily
With all Man’s needs and more.
All life had purpose, form and grace, Harry
And moved in rhythm and even pace.
The Creation of Humans
Then in humility, Maisie
At God’s feet,
Man was presented
His works complete.
One by one Sophie
He laid them out
Upon their backs across the floor.
The giving of Life, Chloe
The very first breath,
Was the breath of God alone.
The Awakening
Awakening to the first breath of dawn, Maisie
Humans newly made,
Inhaled the Holy air
And felt the warm caress of light.
For with his breath, Kirsty
God had infused
Humans with power to create.
To live and know and show again Liam
In truth the beauty of the World.
As poet, painter, scuptor, dancer
Through music, story and song.
To live was to dance. ALL
To dance, to worship.
Heaven was in easy reach.
No need to die to get there.
There was no death.
